Health Public Murcia System is the Health System attending to a population of 1.5 million people in the Murcia Region, in Spain. Dr. Manuel Serrano Gil is a KOL internal medicine doctor, with more than 20 years of experience as a clinician and researcher, and principal investigator of some EU-funded projects in the field of patient empowerment for chronic diseases. In 2006 he was the pioneer of spreading the term expert patient ("paciente experto") in Spanish-speaking countries, bringing it to Spain the Chronic Disease Self Management Program from the University of Standard. He was appointed in 2019, as Chair of the Patient Empowerment Community of Practice at the DRBarometer project for the International Federation of Aging. Since the beginning of the pandemic, he has been working on COVID and vaccines increasing awareness, patient education, and relation with advocacy organizations, under a population health approach for the Health Murcia System.
