If you're reading this, you probably know that Josh Morris played a pivotal leadership role in the 2018 rescue of 13 boys and their soccer coach from a flooded cave system in northern Thailand. If you don't know this story, stop what you're doing and watch the The Rescue, a National Geographic documentary, immediately. I am fortunate to be a member of the North Texas chapter of YPO. This past week, Josh and several others involved in the Thai cave rescue spent two days with us at an all-chapter retreat. It was a truly amazing experience. The retreat theme was "Next Level," designed to get YPOers - a Type A bunch if ever there was one - to step back from the day-to-day noise, come together as a chapter, and apply lessons from the Thai cave rescue to our own lives and the businesses we lead. In contrast to many YPOers, Josh's style is low-key. In keeping with the retreat theme, Josh retold the Thai cave rescue story through the lens of leadership, communication, and making the impossible possible. Even though I'd watched The Rescue and therefore knew of his role and had some sense of his style, it was nonetheless remarkable to watch Josh rivet a room full of 75 CEOs, quietly walking through decision-making processes with both authority and humility. He imparted lessons with respect to cross-cultural communication and trust-building, for example, that were concrete, invaluable, and directly relevant to my business. Josh is approachable, professional, and effective. He is an entrepreneur, an adventurer, a Thai speaker, and - truly - a hero. He's good people and I can't recommend him highly enough.
