Moving from being a student to a working person is a big step in anyone’s life. It’s a big transition. And the biggest regret one can face is, I wish someone had told me that before the interview!

So here are a few tips that will help you stand out at your placement interview.

Get professional

Create a formal email id to begin with. An id like studsam@rediffmail.com worked out fine as long as you were a student. But  a client would take you seriously to do business with that address.

Similarly, learn the right way to behave on social media as a responsible member of an organisation. Social media etiquette has become as important as corporate etiquette in today’s times.

Write your own resume

Don’t copy paste your resume to make it look impressive, especially the career objectives. Most of the times, they don’t even make sense. Write down what you really want to achieve in your career. Have a senior or a mentor take a look at it and hone it.

Your resume doesn’t have to be a wordy document mentioning every responsibility you bore as the head of the debating society.

Include what is relevant and your interviewer really needs to know. Most important – proofread to ensure there are  no grammatical errors and all fonts match.

Prepare for the common interview questions

We all can safely predict some interview questions. Things like introducing yourself, explaining why you’d like to work for a company or explain your career plans. Don’t leave it to chance.

Give a good amount of thought to these questions and prepare answers. Practice saying them with confidence. If you can, run mock interview drills with a friend, mentor or a family member.

Project passion and energy

Don’t learn your answers by rote. Ensure that you have the same amount of energy in your voice every time you introduce yourself. Pour passion into your future plans no matter how many times you’ve explained them before. And you will be able to do that effortlessly if you really mean it.

Do your research

In today’s tech savvy world, it reflects well on you to look up the company you interview for. This will also help you connect your career goals with that of the company’s future goals. You’ll be able to bring in some worldly wisdom into your answers through your awareness of the real world.

This will also come in handy when the interviewer asks you if you have any questions for them. You can show your knowledge and research about the company.

Placement interviews are a great opportunity to get a head start in your career. Make sure that you are prepared well and can ace any kind of interview you find yourself in.
