It has become a multi-cultural mosaic. \u00a0Canada and the United States are the most culturally diverse nations on earth. We are becoming more of a \u201ctoss salad\u201d than a \u201cmelting pot\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><em>As the multicultural population in North America explodes, companies and entrepreneurs often miss market penetration because of<\/em> the <em>failure to understand the target group\u2019s cultural values and customs<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Cultural and ethnic diversity is challenging the way we do business with multicultural communities.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>What is Diversity?<\/strong> \u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">It is a new word which has emerged in our vocabulary. \u00a0Diversity is not a new favor of the month rather it will be a regular feature on the United States and Canadian HR menu. \u00a0It means many things for many people.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">A lot of people have used diversity as a means to promote or further their personal or group agenda. I don\u2019t mean to distract from those agendas. Others have deliberately excluded themselves from the conversation assuming \u201cit\u201d is not for them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><em>The original intent of the movement called diversity management was to create an environment that allows all people to maximize their contribution.<\/em> \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Diversity is here to stay, it is not going to disappear; it will be here for good, so let\u2019s get used to it and celebrate diversity.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Many people equate diversity with cultural differences or affirmative action. But we cannot define diversity so simply.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><em>Diversity is more than simply \u201cus vs. them\u201d \u2013 it is the understanding that we are all unique in various ways. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">For example, <em>diversity is more than just culture<\/em> \u2013 it is the changing demographics of our population.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><em>Diversity is not just affirmative action either\u2014<\/em>it is the elimination of stereotypes and discrimination that affects our ability to understand each other and work together productively.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">In business, <em>diversity increases profitability by bringing in fresh new ideas and methods.<\/em>\u00a0<em>It\u00a0means greater learning and understanding <\/em>in schools<em>.<\/em>\u00a0In relationships,<em> diversity can mean personal growth<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><em>We should not see Diversity as a detriment,<\/em> but rather an asset, a celebration of our individuality as well as our commonalities.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Dimensions of \u00a0Diversity?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">There are primary and secondary dimensions of diversity.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Primary dimensions<\/strong> of diversity, which consist of characteristics we cannot change, include race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual preferences, and mental\/physical abilities or characteristics.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Secondary dimensions<\/strong>, which are aspects of ourselves that are less visible, can be acquired, modified, and sometimes discarded. These aspects include education, communication style, primary language, religion, income level, work style, work\/military experience, family status, organization role\/level, geographic location, group affiliations, and political preferences, among a few.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Advantages of Workplace Diversity<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The Stats Canada predicts that 40 percent of the Canadian labor force will be comprised of minorities by 2015. Other cultures can offer insightful alternatives Canadians might not have considered.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\r\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Productivity increases<\/strong><em> exponentially when people of all cultures pull together towards a single inspiring goal.<\/em> We no longer complete in local markets rather in global markets. One value is that individual identity versus corporate identity. Many Asian communities think and relate in terms of corporate identity, our families, communities and businesses. Don\u2019t we want employees who take ownership and loyalty in their workplaces\/businesses?<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\r\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>New attitudes<\/strong><em> are brought to the business table by people from diverse cultures.<\/em> For instance, Canadians may want to consider adopting the perspective other cultures have about time. Our culture believes that <strong>\u201ctime is money\u201d<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cgetting to the bottom line\u201d<\/strong> is paramount in business. However, in most other countries around the world <strong>\u201ctime is for building relationships\u201d<\/strong> and an integral part of getting to know the other party you are considering doing business with before starting a transaction. How much smoother would business deals go in this country if we followed this practice more closely?<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\r\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>New Language skills<\/strong><em> are obviously needed in today\u2019s increasingly global economy\u2013and diverse workers often have this proficiency. <\/em>If a company needs specific knowledge or language skills, it may hire foreign nationals for help. In Canada, we like to believe that English is \u201cthe language of the world.\u201d While that may be true for business, our native tongue ranks second in the world behind Chinese and just slightly ahead of Hindustani. <strong>To truly build relationships with the other people of the world, we must speak their language<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\r\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>New Global Players:<\/strong> \u00a0<em>Understanding how United States\/Canada fits into the world picture is crucial.<\/em>\u00a0 We tend to call identify diverse communities through hyphenated names like, Chinese-Americans, Indo-Americans, Arab-Americans; I believe the time has come to call everyone global Americans. We live and work in a global arena.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\r\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>New processes<\/strong><em> can result when people with different ideas come together and collaborate. <\/em><strong>In today\u2019s fast-moving world, there is no longer room for thinking, \u201cWe <\/strong><strong>have<\/strong><strong> always done things this way and cannot change.\u201d <\/strong>American\/Canadian workers must bring multiple skills to the environment, think cross culturally, and adapt quickly to new situations. Those who meet these criteria are likely to do well, regardless of culture\u2013even in tough economic times.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">People from diverse cultures can make American\/Canadian companies more productive and profitable.
