We don\u2019t hear enough about Her story and we should.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">March is celebrated in the United States as the one month in the year where women\u2019s herstories are recognized and appreciated. In recent years, the US has even reclaimed March 8<sup>th<\/sup> as International Women\u2019s Day.\u00a0 For long decades as countries around the world, including India, where I grew up, celebrated the day with marches and songs recognizing the power and contributions of women to public life, women in the US knew nothing about March 8th.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">This is ironic, because <strong>international Women\u2019s day was actually created to honor the courageous women in the United States who held <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/voices\/international-womens-day-where-it-comes-from-history-strike-a8245711.html\">strikes demanding better working conditions, wages, and safety in the early part of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Strikes for justice are a critical part of women\u2019s Herstory that often fail to get the attention that they deserve. \u00a0Yet, this March, millions of women in Spain reminded the world that women\u2019s labor literally makes the world go round.\u00a0 <strong>Their cry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/mar\/08\/spanish-women-give-up-work-for-a-day-in-first-feminist-strike\">\u201cQuando las Mujeres Paran todos se para\u201d translates simply as \u201cWhen women stop, everything stops!\u201d<\/a><\/strong> Women ceased their daily chores and did not show up for their paid jobs.<strong> Millions gathered instead in the streets and plazas expressing their frustration at the unjust treatment that women receive at home and at work and calling attention to the rampant sexual harassment they experience. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">In the US, another strike was making headlines \u2013 for nearly two weeks, teachers in West Virginia refused to go to work. They held massive rallies\u00a0at the capitol almost daily, protesting low pay and\u00a0rising health care costs. <strong>On the strike\u2019s ninth day,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2018\/03\/06\/tentative-deal-reached-end-west-virginia-teacher-strike-governor-says\/398850002\/\">Gov. Jim Justice announced a deal<\/a>\u00a0to give all state employees a 5%\u00a0raise and halt raising health insurance premiums.<\/strong> When it was over many teachers \u2014 exhausted, overjoyed and eager, they said,\u00a0to get back to their students \u2014 wept.\u00a0 These past few weeks, teachers in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/04\/03\/us\/teacher-walkouts-strikes.html\">Alabama and Kentucky<\/a> are threatening to follow in their footsteps.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The strikes in Spain and in West Virginia came on the heels of another contemporary social media movement as women stepped forward in increasing numbers to talk about the persistence of sexual abuse in the workplace using the hashtag #MeToo.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-929 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/speakinedit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/KABITAA.jpgHH_.jpg?resize=300%2C266&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">These do not simply show us the power of collective organizing, they show the power of women.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">And, it reminds us that women have been at forefront of critical struggles for justice for many centuries now.\u00a0 The reason that Herstories matter, is that without them our collective History is bereft of the experience and voice and wisdom of half the population. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/08\/insider\/overlooked-obituary.html\">The New York Times just owned up to this bias with their new series on women\u2019s Obituaries<\/a>. And, as with women, <strong>the voices and stories of people of color, indigenous peoples, sexual, ethnic and religious minorities are rarely recorded, recognized and shared.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">That world of Philanthropy is no less vulnerable to the \u2018His\u2019tory bias.<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Last month, the Chronicle of Philanthropy carried a lead story called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philanthropy.com\/article\/After-25-Years-of-Talk-Are\/242709\">\u201cNo More Excuses\u201d<\/a> that reminded us that<strong> 9 of 10 nonprofit leaders are white,<\/strong> a fact that has not changed in over 25 years.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">And, while the philanthropic sector in the US boasts a high level of participation by women, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncrp.org\/publication\/responsive-philanthropy-spring-2015\/implicit-bias-and-its-role-in-philanthropy-and-grantmaking\">gender bias in the sector against women continues to make itself visible in a thousand different ways<\/a> as charitable organizations seeking to address women\u2019s rights struggle for equal access to funding dollars;<strong> as women professionals, especially those of color, are frequently paid less than their male peers, rarely chosen to lead major foundations, and routinely subjected to subtle and not so subtle forms of discrimination.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-931 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/speakinedit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/DXxgrTDXkAAHkUr.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">At the Ford Foundation, I studied how issues of implicit bias affect our efforts to bring greater equity to our own sector by speaking to foundation and non-profit colleagues who have been challenging both racial and gender bias in their institutions from hiring to board selection to grant-making decisions.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">As the 2015 Responsive Philanthropy article on the same topic reminds us, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncrp.org\/publication\/responsive-philanthropy-spring-2015\/implicit-bias-and-its-role-in-philanthropy-and-grantmaking\">even when people explicitly and consciously support fairness, nonconscious processes can undermine their intentions through implicit bias<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\n<!-- Quick Adsense WordPress Plugin: http:\/\/quickadsense.com\/ -->\n<div class=\"fff31b069dab2d4baa9938924ee8e97c\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: left; margin: 10px 10px 10px 0;\">\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n    style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n    data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n    data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n    data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8586106947150931\"\r\n    data-ad-slot=\"5455236699\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n    (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">So, how can we ensure we don\u2019t relegate women\u2019s \u201cherstories\u201d to a token month?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-930 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/speakinedit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/MEE-TOO.jpg?resize=300%2C132&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Challenge History and Question Objectivity<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Foundations assume we are fair and objective, we mythologize our commitment to ideals, we valorize our founders, yet this actually increases implicit bias; we need to guard against biased versions of our own \u201cstories\u201d. Where are the \u201cHerstories\u201d in our foundation? <strong>Where are the \u201cBlack and LGBTQ stories\u201d? The \u201cIndigenous\u201d or \u201cMuslim\u201d stories?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Take the Implicit Bias Tests<\/strong>:<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/implicit.harvard.edu\/implicit\/takeatest.html\">\u00a0https:\/\/implicit.harvard.edu\/implicit\/takeatest.html<\/a> what you learn will make you humble and change your assumptions<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Incentivize Fairness<\/strong>:<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Consider changing performance reviews: make it clear to all managers that the foundation values greater gender\/racial equity in staffing and grant-making and is looking for concrete outcomes!<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Count aka Conduct an Audit:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Implicitly biased behavior is best detected by using data -conduct a formal assessment of how well your institution does look at what you are funding, who you are hiring, how many women or people of color sit on a grantee\u2019s board, etc to determine how certain patterns of behavior lead to disparate outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Affirmatively acknowledge your current status:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">When Darren Walker realized the Ford Foundation had been lacking a lens on issues of disability rights and access, he wrote a public letter acknowledging the \u201chistory\u201d of having excluded people with disabilities from the foundation\u2019s work and community. Public scrutiny helps!<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>State and pursue inclusive outcomes: <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Focus on changing outcomes \u2013<strong> it is important for foundations to set very public and specific goals for changing the foundation\u2019s outcomes in this arena.<\/strong> Both the Kellogg and Annie Casey Foundations have set such goals.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Improve decision-making processes at all levels that involve a cross-section of decision-makers<\/strong>:<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Implicit biases are a function of automaticity. Engaging in mindful, deliberate processing that includes conscious conversation about implicit biases and includes a critical mass, at least 30%, of underrepresented groups in the decision-making process from board representation to program decisions reduces bias.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Add Intersectional Equity Training to Orientation and Professional Development: <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Don\u2019t assume raising the issues will be enough \u2013 use expert advice and support to help orient all members of your organization and help them strengthen their skills even if they are experienced professionals \u2013 we can all learn!<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Monitor and improve the environment<\/strong>:<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Foundation environments assume that they are \u201cinclusive\u201d or simply \u201cprofessional\u201d but often are unconsciously reflecting the dominant white\/male\/christian culture \u2013 <strong>when we bring in diverse voices it should be with a view to consciously helping to shift the work culture itself, not simply expecting women and people of color to \u201cassimilate\u201d.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Collect data and monitor outcomes<\/strong>:<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Because implicit bias cannot be reliably self-reported,<strong> it is important to set goals and collect data to see if they are being met over an extended period of time.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Of course, none of these strategies are magic bullets to ensure more gender just outcomes.<strong> But the women in Spain, West Virginia, and around the globe still hear the echoes of their sisters who marched in the streets of New York in 1905 singing Bread and Roses who ensured that we have an International Women\u2019s Day.<\/strong> Our actions could help Philanthropy write a new Herstory!<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Disclaimer:<\/span><\/h5>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">THE VIEWS AND OPINIONS EXPRESSED IN THIS ARTICLE ARE THOSE OF THE AUTHOR AND DO NOT REFLECT THE VIEWS OF SPEAKIN, ITS MANAGEMENT OR AFFILIATES.
